Lockheed C-5A/B Galaxy model airplane The C-5A was designed to complement the smaller C-141, with the requirement that it could operate from the same airfields. Construction of the prototype began in August, 1966, and flew for the first time on June 30, 1968. The lower deck of the airplane has an unobstructed length of 121 ft. and a width of 19 ft. To support the extraordinary loads that the aircraft is capable of carrying, the landing gear has 28 wheels. There were a total of 81 C-5As built. A major setback was suffered in the late 1970s by the discovery of the early onset of wing structural fatigue, forcing the design of a new wing. A new version of the airplane, the C-5B, was produced from 1985 to 1989, with a total of 50 aircraft being built. The C-5A is powered by four 41,000-lb Allison thrust General Electric TF-39-GE-1 turbofans, giving it an average cruising speed of 518 mph, and a range (with maximum payload) of 3,749 miles. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and comes fully assembled with removable desk stand.
