Grumman F-14 Tomcat model airplanes (with working wings)

Unquestionably one of the finest warplanes in the world today, the initial F-l4A version of the Tomcat has been in service with the US Navy since October, 1972. The primary role of this variable-geometry airplane is to provide long-range air defense to the US naval fleet. Primary interception armament consists of six Hughes Phoenix air-to-air missiles, currently the longest-range air-to-air missile in use anywhere in the world (more than 124 miles). Its use, in conjunction with the extremely powerful Hughes AWG-9 radar mounted in the nose, provides the Tomcat with the ability to detect and attack an airborne target while it is still 100 miles away. The Tomcat is also very strong structurally, many of the airframe components being manufactured of titanium and boron-epoxy or other composites. By the time production of this airplane ended in March 1987, 554 F-14As had been built, including the 12 developmental airplanes. The F-14A is powered by two 20,900-lb. thrust Pratt & Whitney TF30-P-412A afterburning turbofans, giving the F-14A a maximum speed at altitude of Mach 2.34 (1,564 mph); service ceiling over 50,000 feet; and range, interceptor with external fuel, about 2,000 miles. Airplane armament is one General Electric M61A-1 20-mm multi-barrelled Vulcan cannon in forward fuselage; various combinations of bombs or missiles, the latter including Phoenix, Sidewinder, and Sparrow, tactical reconnaissance pod, or ECM equipment.
