General Dynamics / Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon model airplanes Developed during the Airforce's search for a lightweight inexpensive fighter, the F-16 went head to head with the YF-17 during final competition. The F-16 won this aircraft competition for many reasons, not the least of which was it's parts compatibility; it utilizes the same engine as is found in the F-15. It is, arguably, the best dog fighter in the world capable of pulling 9 plus G's. As shown above, the F-16A was also used by the USAF Air Demonstration Team,"Thunderbirds". The prototype F-16 first flew on February 2, 1974, with the first production F-16A flown on August 7, 1978, and handed over formally to the US Air Force 10 days later. By August, 1990, more than 2,600 F-16s had been delivered out of 3,530 airplanes ordered and were in service with 17 customers in 16 countries. Some of the latest technology can be seen in the structure and avionics systems of the F-16. For example, the wings are "blended" into the fuselage, which not only helps to save weight, but also increases the overall lift at high angles of attack and reduces drag in the transonic speed range. The F-16C incorporated MSIP features and includes ground-attack capability plus Low-Altitude Navigation, Targeting, infrared for Night (LANTIRN) and Airborne-Self-Protection Jamming (ASPJ) systems. First deliveries of this airplane were made in October 1986. Power of the F-16 is either one 23,770-lb. Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-220 or (on the F-16Cs built after July 1986) one 28,984-lb. General Electric F110-GE-100 afterburning turbofan, giving the airplane a maximum level speed of more than 1,320 mph; service ceiling above 50,000 feet; and operational radius of 575 miles. Airplane armament is one 20-mm multi-barrelled cannon, a wingtip missile station on each wing, plus one underfuselage and six underwing hardpoints enabling the carriage of a 20,450 lb. warload of air-to-air or air-to-surface missiles, ECM, reconnaissance or rocket pods, iron or "smart" bombs, or fuel tanks. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
