US Navy interest in German delta-wing research led, in 1947, to the design by Douglas of a carrier-based interceptor aircraft which embodied a variation of the pure delta wing. The first prototype of this airplane made its maiden flight on January 23, 1951. The potential of the F4D was demonstrated effectively by the second prototype on October 3,1953, then powered by the XJ40-WE-8 turbojet, which set a new world speed record of 752.9 mph. The first production F4D-1 was flown in June 5, 1954. Notable for its exceptional rate of climb, in May, 1958, five time-to-height records were captured by a USMC pilot in this aircraft. The 419th and last production airplane was delivered on December 22, 1958, surviving in first-line service until the late 1960s, having been re-designated F-6A in September 1962. The F4D was powered by one Pratt & Whitney J57-P-8B turbojet developing 14,500-lb. thrust with afterburning. The aircraft had a maximum speed of 722 mph at sea level and 695 mph at 36,000 feet, initial climb rate of 18,300 feet per minute, service ceiling of 55,000 feet, and range of 1,200 miles. Airplane armament was four fixed forward-firing 20-mm cannon, plus up to 4,000 lb. of stores (including auxiliary fuel, bombs, rockets, or missiles on six underwing hardpoints. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand. Dimensions: Wingspan, 12 7/8" -Length, 16 3/4 " -Scale, 1/32 ESSN017W - Retired Order
