Though often overshadowed by the B-17, not only was the B-24 Liberator built in considerably greater numbers than the B-17, but it was the most extensively produced of the USA's wartime aircraft, with a total of more than 19,000 airplanes having been built; even Winston Churchill used a B-24 for his personal transport, operated under the name Commando. The prototype XB-24 first flew on December 29, 1939, but even before the prototype had flown, Consolidated had begun to receive orders for its new bomber. Besides excellent long-range capability, the large-volume fuselage of this airplane lent itself to adaptation to fulfill other roles and it was this versatility combined with long range that was the key to success for the B-24. The major production version of the airplane was the B-24J, of which 6,678 were built. Though used by the air forces of several countries, nowhere had these airplanes been of greater value than in the Pacific Theater, where their long range and versatility made them true "maids of all work" The B-24J was powered by four 1,200-hp Pratt & Whitney R-1830-65 Twin Wasp turbocharged radial piston engines, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 290 mph at 25,000 feet, cruising speed of 215 mph, service ceiling of 28,000 feet, and a range of 2,100 miles. Airplane armament was ten 50-caliber machine guns (in nose, upper, ventral "ball" and tail turrets, and beam positions), plus a maximum bombload of 12,800 lbs, or a normal bombload of 5,000 lbs. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
