North American B-25J Mitchell model airplane

The B-25, known predominantly for Doolittle's raid on Tokyo just 3 months after Pearl Harbor, had a very colorful career during the World War II. It could be said that this was America's first attack aircraft. Air crews stationed in Burma and other parts of Southeast Asia took it upon themselves to refit their B-25's with large arrays of 50-caliber machine guns and used these airplanes in strafing runs against the enemy. This did not go unnoticed by the then U.S. War Department. Later B-25's came off the assembly line bristling with 12 or more forward facing machine guns.

Named Mitchell after the controversial champion of US air power, William "Billy" Mitchell, the first B-25 was flown in August, 1940. Initial deliveries to the USAAC were made in the spring of 1941, to the 17th Bombardment Group (Medium), and it was an airplane of this unit that was the first to sink a Japanese submarine on December 24, 1941. Sixteen specially-prepared B-25s from this same group made the historic attack on the Japanese mainland on April 18 ,1942, led by Lieutenant Colonel James H. Doolittle. Then the heaviest airplanes operated from an aircraft carrier, these planes were flown off the carrier USS Hornet to attack targets some 800 miles distant at Kobe, Nagoya, Tokyo, and Yokohama; afterwards flying on to China where most of the airplanes force-landed. Mitchells served throughout World War II, the B-25J being the final and most extensively built version (4,390 airplanes). B-25s continued in use for many years after the World War II, particularly in the air arms of smaller nations. The USAF's last B-25 staff transport was retired on May 21, 1960. The B-25J was powered by two 1,700-hp Wright R-2600-92 Cyclone radial piston engines, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 272 mph at 13,000 feet, service ceiling of 24,200 feet, and a range of 1,350 miles.
