Designed to meet a demanding US Army Air Corps specification of 1939 for a high-speed medium bomber, the Martin Model 179 proposal was considered to be so far in advance of competing submissions that in September, 1939, the company was awarded an "off the drawing board" contract for 201 of these airplanes. This action, unprecedented in USAAC history, required no prototype or preproduction aircraft, and the first production B-26, as the airplane was designated, was flown initially on November 25, 1940. Subsequently named Marauder, the aircraft was a cantilever shoulder-wing monoplane with a roomy fuselage of circular cross-section accommodating a crew of five (later seven), and with retractable tricycle landing gear. Official testing of the airplane confirmed that the B-26 more than met the official specification, but this performance had been achieved at the expense of good low-speed handling. After several training accidents, modifications to the airplane were made to improve low-speed performance. As a result the Marauder went on to record the lowest attrition rate of any American aircraft operated by the US 9th Air Force in Europe. Early deployment was confined to the Pacific Theater, but soon the Marauder was in use in North Africa, Corsica, Italy, Sardinia, Sicily, and southern France. One of the major versions of this airplane, the B-26G (893 built), used two 2,000-hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800-43 Double Wasp redial piston engines, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 283 mph at 19,800 feet, service ceiling of 19,800 feet, and a range of 1,100 miles. Airplane armament was eleven 50-caliber machine guns (in fixed forward-firing, trainable nose and waist mounts, and in power-operated dorsal and tail turrets), plus up to 4,000 lbs of bombs. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
