The prototype of this airplane was flown for the first time on October 14, 1938, and in 1940 the P-40 became the first American fighter capable of exceeding 300 mph. This aircraft is probably best known for being supplied to Brigadier General Chennault's AVG in China where, deployed with considerable skill, the P-40 in several variants achieved notable success against Japanese aircraft. When production of the airplane ended in December 1944, with the exceptions of the Republic P-47 and North American P-51, it was the most extensively built US fighter of World War II, with 15,000 planes delivered. The P-40B had self-sealing fuel tanks, armor, and was armed with two wing-mounted 7.7-mm machine guns. The P-40K was powered by an Allison V-1710-73 engine, with 1,300 airplanes built. The P-40N was a major and the final production version of the airplane of which 5,200 were built. The P-40N had improved performance achieved by weight saving and by use of an Allison V-1710-81 inline piston engine or , subsequently, similar powered -99 or -115 versions of that engine; lighter weight and improved equipment incorporated during the production run. This model was Supplied to Australia, China, South Africa, UK, and the Soviet Union. It had a maximum speed of 343 mph at 15,000 feet, climb to 14,000 feet in 6 min. 42 sec.; service ceiling of 31,000 feet; and a range with auxiliary fuel of 1,080 miles at 10,000 feet. Airplane armament was six 50-caliber machine guns, plus up to 1,500 lbs of bombs. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
