The first US aircraft to be designed as a radar-equipped night-fighter, the first prototype of the airplane initially flew on May 21, 1942, with production aircraft appearing toward the end of 1943. Black Widows were in service in Europe by July 1944, shooting down four German bombers in their first World War II engagement. P-61s subsequently destroyed a number of German flying bombs during the V-1 offensive against Antwerp, and the use of the P-61 for deep intruder missions in the European Theater emphasized the versatility of the heavy fighter. There were a total of 706 Black Widows built. The P-61B was powered by two 2,000-hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800-65 Double Wasp redial piston engines, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 366 mph at 20,000 feet, service ceiling of 33,100 feet, and a maximum range of 1,350 miles. Airplane armament was four 20-mm cannon in lower forward fuselage and four 50-caliber machine guns in dorsal barbette, plus up to 6,400 lbs of bombs or other stores on four underwing hardpoints. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
