The prototype for the Wildcat flew for the first time on September 2, 1937. Wildcats had conspicuous success in the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway, and in the World War II operations in Guadalcanal. This airplane was at the center of all significant action in the Pacific until superseded by more advanced aircraft in 1943. Wildcats also saw action with the US Navy in North Africa during late 1942. The F4F-4 was powered by one 1,200-hp Pratt & Whitney R-1830-36 Twin Wasp 14-cylinder redial piston engine, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 318 mph at 19,400 feet, cruising speed of 155 mph, initial climb rate of 1,950 feet per minute, service ceiling of 39,400 feet, and a range of 770 miles. Airplane armament was six fixed 50-caliber Browning machine guns, plus two 100 lb. bombs. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
