The prototype first being flown on August 1, 1941, deliveries of Avengers began in January, 1942. This was the airplane, in fact, flown by ex-president George Bush. With the demand for Avengers exceeding Grumman's productive capacity, the Eastern Division of General Motors was contracted as a second source of supply, with these airplanes carrying the TBM designation rather than Grumman's TDF. A total of 7,546 Avengers had been built when production ended in June, 1945. However, cancellation of this airplanes production at the end of World War II did not also bring an end to the Avenger's career. In US Navy service the airplane fulfilled a valuable role for the search and location of submarines until specialized aircraft were developed for this purpose. Other tasks for which conversions were developed included versions for all-weather and night operations, electronic countermeasures, carrier onboard delivery, and target towing. The Avenger TBM-3 was powered by one 1,750-hp Wright R-2600-20 Cyclone 14-14-cylinder radial engine, providing the airplane a maximum speed of 267 mph at 15,000 feet, cruising speed of 147 mph, service ceiling of 23,400 feet, and a range of 1,130 miles. Airplane armament was two forward-firing 50-caliber machine guns, one gun of the same caliber in dorsal turret, and one 30-caliber gun in ventral position; plus up to 2,000 lbs. of weapons in bomb bay, and provision for rocket projectiles, drop-tanks, or radar pod under wing. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand. Dimensions: Wingspan, 17 1/2" -Length, 13 1/2" Item #AM237-AR - Air Corps Price $139.95
