Avro Lancaster model airplane

No one would dispute the statement that the Avro 683 Lancaster was the finest British heavy bomber of World War II; many feeling that it was the finest heavy bomber serving on either side during World War II (of course, a number of this latter group might be British). The Lancaster prototype first flew on January 9, 1941. The new bomber was an immediate success, and large production orders for the airplane were placed. Such was the speed of development in wartime that the first production Lancaster was flown in October, 1941. The bomb-bay, designed originally to carry 4,000 lbs. of bombs, was enlarged progressively to carry bigger and bigger bombs, eventually up to the enormous 22,000-lb. "Grand Slam", the heaviest bomb carried by any aircraft in World War II. The last Lancaster was delivered on February 2, 1946, with a production total of 7,377 airplanes. After World War II, a number of Lancasters were used to bring home prisoners of war from Europe, other planes were converted for temporary use as civil transports. A few Lancasters still survive, notably one airworthy example with the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. This airplane was powered by four 1,640-hp Rolls-Royce Merlin 24 inline piston engines giving the airplane a maximum speed of 287 mph at 11,500 feet, cruising speed of 210 mph, service ceiling of 24,500 feet, and a range of 2,530 miles with a 7,000-lb. bombload. Airplane armament was eight 303-caliber machine guns (two each in nose and dorsal turrets, and four in tail turret), plus bomb load comprising one 22,000-lb. bomb or up to 14,000 lbs. of smaller bombs.

All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
