The first prototype of the Hurricane was flown on November 6, 1935, with the first production airplanes being delivered in December, 1937. On February 11, 1938, there was great excitement in Britain when banner headlines announced that on the previous afternoon one of these new "Hurricanes" had been flown a distance of 327 miles in only 48 minutes, an average speed of almost 409 mph! The first Allied aircraft to deploy air-to-ground rockets, these weapons made the Hurricane a giant in capability, extending its operational life beyond the end of World War II, for it was not until January 1947 that the RAF's last Hurricane squadron received replacement aircraft. Between production in the UK and Canada, there were a total of 14,231 Hurricanes built. Undoubtedly one of the great fighter aircraft of World War, II, it is difficult to overstate the capabilities of this remarkable airplane. In the Battle of Britain, Hurricanes destroyed more enemy aircraft than all other defenses, air or ground, combined. This statement must be put in perspective, as it resulted from Supermarine Spitfires taking on the Messerschmitt Bf 109s, allowing the slower Hurricanes to battle against the German bombers. It is not really surprising, therefore, that for many years after the end of World War II, a lone Hurricane had the honor of leading the RAF fly-past over London, flown each year to commemorate victory in the Battle of Britain. The Hurricane Mk IIB was powered by one 1,280-hp Roll-Royce Merlin XX 12-cylinder Vee piston engine, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 342 mph at 22,000 feet, maximum cruising speed of 296 mph at 20,000 feet, service ceiling of 36,500 feet, and a range with internal fuel of 480 miles. Airplane armament was twelve 303-caliber forward-firing machine guns, plus two 250-lb. or 500-lb. bombs. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
