The prototype of the Typhoon was first flown on February 24, 1940, with the first production airplane being supplied to the RAF in September, 1941. After some initial airframe problems in which several pilots lost their lives, by the end of 1942 the Typhoon had become a significant fighter-bomber. Full potential of the airplane was realized in late 1943 when it was equipped to carry rocket projectiles. So equipped, the Typhoon proved effective against German coastal shipping, and almost continuous day and night low-level attacks on German communications by this airplane made a major contribution to success on D-day. There were a total of 3,330 Typhoons built, virtually all production versions by the Gloster Aircraft Company. The Typhoon was powered by one 2,180-hp Napier Saber IIA 24-cylinder 'H' piston engine, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 405 mph at 18,000 feet, service ceiling of 34,000 feet, and a range with maximum weapon load of 510 miles. Airplane armament was four 20-mm cannon in wings, plus up to eight 60-lb. rocket projectiles or two 1,000-lb. bombs on underwing racks. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
