The first prototype of this airplane flew during December, 1941, and service tests proved so satisfactory that the Imperial Japanese Army quickly accepted the plane for production. Code-named "Tony" by the Allies, the initial production Ki-61-1 version began to enter combat operations from New Guinea in April, 1943, soon proving that it was well able to hold its own against Allied fighters, and with increasing production the airplane was soon found in all theaters in which the Japanese Army was operating. When production ended in January, 1945, a total of 2,666 airplanes had been built. The Ki-61-1c was powered by one 1,175-hp Kawasaki Ha-40 V-12 piston engine, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 348 mph, service ceiling of 32,810 feet, and a maximum range of 1,181 miles. Airplane armament was two fuselage-mounted 50-caliber machine guns and two wing-mounted 20-mm Ho-5 cannon of Japanese design and manufacture; plus provision for two drop-tanks or two 551-lb. bombs. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
