Without doubt the most famous Japanese single-seat fighter aircraft of all time, the Mitsubishi Zero-Sen, prototype was first flown on April 1, 1939. Unbelievably successful when introduced into the Sino-Japanese War, this amazing fighter, allocated the Allied codename "Zeke", seemed to fill the skies over the Pacific during 1941 and early 1942. However, after the Battle of Midway in June, 1942, Allied fighters began to gain the initiative and the A6M never again held wide-scale air superiority. The Zero remained in service until the end of the World War II, built to a total of approximately 10,965 planes. Large numbers of early versions of the airplane were used in kamikaze attacks during the closing months of the World War II. The A6M2-N was a floatplane version with 327 airplanes built. A major production version was the A6M5 introduced in 1943 to counter the growing capability of Allied fighters. The A6M6c used one 1,130-hp Nakajima Sakae 31 radial piston engine, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 346 mph at 19,685 feet, service ceiling of 35,105 feet, and a maximum range of 1,118 miles. Airplane armament was two 20-mm cannon (in wings) and three 52-caliber machine guns (two in wings and one in fuselage), plus underwing launch rails for eight 22-lb. or two 132-lb. air-to-air rockets. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
