Acknowledged generally by pilots to be a superior aircraft to the Luftwaffe's other main World War II fighter, the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the Fw 190 prototype was first flown on June 1, 1939. Deliveries of this airplane began in August 1941, and when the first clashes between Fw 190s and Supermarine Spitfires came soon afterwards, the superiority of the German aircraft over the Spitfire was immediately apparent. This was the beginning of a truly impressive service career which was to involve almost 20,000 airplanes, built in many versions. The 190D-9 used one 1,776-hp Junkers Jumo 213A-1 12-cylinder inverted Vee piston engine, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 426 mph at 21,655 feet, climb to 19,685 feet in 7 min. 6 sec., service ceiling of 39,370 feet, and a range of 519 miles. Airplane armament was two 51-caliber MG 131 machine guns and two 20-mm MG 151 cannon, plus one 1,102-lb. SC500 bomb. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
