Established in aviation history as the world's first turbojet-powered fighter to enter combat, the Me 262 prototype flew for the first time on April 18, 1941. The vacillations of German leaders and the insistence of Adolf Hitler that the Me 262 should be suitable for use as a high-speed bomber are the reasons usually quoted to explain the delay in getting this tactically important airplane into service, In truth, it was development of the engines to provide adequate thrust and reliability that was the limiting factor. Fortunately, Junkers was making faster progress than BMW was (whose engines it was supposed to use), and in July, 1944, the first Me 262A-1a fighters began to enter Luftwaffe service. Total production of the Me 262 amounted to about 1,430 airplanes, and there is little doubt that if this plane had entered service at a much earlier date it could well have tipped the air war in Germany's favor by making the Allied daylight bombing program too hazardous. The aircraft was powered by two 1,984-lb thrust Junkers Jumo 004B-1/-2/-3 turbojets, providing the airplane with a maximum speed of 540 mph at 19,685 feet, service ceiling of 37,565 feet, and a range on internal fuel of 652 miles. Airplane armament was four 30-mm MK 108 cannon in nose. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
