Certainly the most versatile, and arguably most valuable, German airplane of World War II, the Junkers Ju 88 in progressively improved versions continued in production throughout the war. The prototype of the airplane made its initial flight on December 21, 1936, with the first production airplanes entering service in September, 1939. The Ju 88 was almost as fast as contemporary fighters, and had excellent maneuverability. When production ended, almost 15,000 Ju 88s in numerous versions had been built, this total emphasizing the significant role that the airplane had played in Luftwaffe operations. The Ju88A-4 used two 1,350-hp Junkers Jumo 211J-1 12-cylinder inverted-Vee piston engines, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 292 mph at 17,390 feet, service ceiling of 26,900 feet, and a maximum range of 1,696 miles. Airplane armament was one forward-firing 51-caliber Mg 131 or two 31-caliber Mg 81 machine guns, two similar guns in rear of cockpit firing aft, and two firing aft below the fuselage, plus up to 4,409 lbs. of bombs carried internally and externally. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
