The remarkable Komet (comet) rocket-powered interceptor fighter was developed from the designs of Dr. Alexander Lippisch who, for many years, had been working on tailless sailplane designs. The very first prototype was tested initially as a glider. In the summer of 1941 a powered prototype reached speeds up to 550 mph, another reaching 623.85 mph. The first production deliveries of Me 163B-1a interceptors began in May, 1944. This airplane saw action for the first time on July 28 of that year when five Me 163s attacked a formation of Boeing B-17s. This proved ineffective, for the closing speed of the two airplanes of about 808 mph meant that the slow-firing MK 108 cannon could be fired for only three seconds before the pilot had to break off his attack. This problem was never fully resolved, and production of the airplane ended in February, 1945, after nearly 400 of all variants had been built. The Me 163B-1a was powered by one 3,750-lb thrust Walter HWK 509A-2 rocket motor, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 596 mph at 32,810 feet, service ceiling of 39,700 feet, and a maximum powered endurance 7 minutes 30 seconds. Airplane armament was two 30-mm MK 108 cannon in wing roots. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
