Code named "Claude" by the Allies, the first prototype of this airplane, flown on February 4, 1935, reached a top speed of 280 mph. The A5M2a and A5M2b were regarded as the Japanese navy's most important fighter aircraft during the Sino-Japanese War. At the beginning of the war in the Pacific the A5M4 was in first-line use, but performance of the airplane was found inadequate to confront allied fighters, and by the summer of 1942, all A5Ms had been transferred to second-line duties, many surviving airplanes being used in kamikaze attacks in the closing months of World War II. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
