The first American-built airplane to be used operationally by the RAF during World War II, the Lockheed Hudson stemmed from urgent British requirements in early 1938 for a maritime patrol/navigational trainer aircraft. Faced with the problem of producing these airplanes as quickly as possible, Lockheed proposed a militarized version of the Lockheed 14 Super Electra. Despite its derivation from a peaceful airliner, the Hudson achieved some surprising "firsts". For example, a Hudson shot down a Dornier Do 18 flying-boat on October 8, 1939, the first RAF victory to be recorded in World War II by an American-built aircraft. In May, 1943, a Hudson became the first airplane in RAF service to sink a German U-boat by rocket fire. The Hudson Mk 1 was powered by two 1,100-hp Wright GR-1820-G-102A radial piston engines, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 246 mph at 6,500 feet, service ceiling of 25,000 feet, and a range of 1,960 miles. Airplane armament was two 303-caliber forward-firing machine guns, and two similar weapons in a dorsal turret, plus up to 1,400 lbs. of bombs or depth charges in internal bomb bay. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
