de Havilland D.H.82 Tiger Moth model airplane

The success of the de Havilland Moth as a civil trainer led, inevitably, to the development of a military version of the airplane known as the Moth Trainer. With modifications and a more powerful engine, the plane was then designated Tiger Moth, and was first flown on October 26, 1931, with first deliveries of the airplane being made to No. 3 Flying Training School at Grantham in November, 1931. The outbreak of World War II saw civil airplanes impressed for RAF communications and training duties, and large orders for this airplane were placed. Skis or floats could even be fitted if required. Throughout the winter of 1939 and the following spring, British units operated in northern France, providing valuable communications facilities until the Dunkirk evacuation, when surviving airplanes were flown back to Britain. Also in December, 1939, coastal patrol squadrons of flying school students were formed; however futile this may seem, it was considered that despite an inability to attack, the sound of any airplane engine might deter a U-boat commander from running on the surface and thus reduce his capacity to attack shipping. It was in a wartime trainer role, however, that the Tiger Moth made its greatest contribution, equipping Elementary Flying Training Schools in the UK and several other nations. More than 8,000 Tiger Moths had been built by the end of the war, the airplane becoming available in large numbers as war surplus at that point. In addition to obvious use as trainers, or for sport and pleasure, these airplanes found unexpected employment in agricultural duster/sprayer use. Even into the 1990s, large numbers of the airplane remained in use worldwide, veritable treasures that are difficult to acquire and likely to appreciate in value, and continue to provide pleasure for many years to come. The D.H.82C was powered by one 145-hp de Havilland Gipsy Major 1C inline piston engine, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 107 mph, cruising speed of 90 mph, a service ceiling of 14,600 feet, and a range of 275 miles.
