The Albatros D.V, shown in the lage picture above, was the biplane flown by the famous German air ace Baron Von Richthofen, known also as "The Red Baron". (He had earlier flown a Fokker Dr 1 triplane, World Air Corps model #AM307-AR.) One of the significant improvements of the D.III and D.V models over the previous Albatros D.II airplane, was the relocation of the radiator in the upper wing center-section being moved outward. This was a result of combat experience, for many a pilot had lost his life when a bullet or shrapnel splinter had pierced the radiator directly over his head, the resulting stream of scalding water being thrown directly into his face by the slipstream. Approximately 1500 of these airplanes entered World War I in 1917 and 1918, at first with significant success, particularly in the hands of The Red Baron and other members of the legendary Flying Circus. Soon, however, Allied aircraft, including S.E.5s and Sopwith Camels, regained the upper hand. The Albatros D.V used one 180-200-hp Mercedes D.IIa inline piston engine (power varied according to compression ratio). This gave the airplane a maximum level speed of 116 mph, rate of climb 4 minutes to 3,280 feet, service ceiling of 18,700 feet, and endurance of two hours. Armament on this biplane was two fixed forward-firing 7.92-mm (31-caliber) LMG 08/15 machine guns. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
