Developed from the single-engine Ju 52, the tri-motor Ju 52/3m was first tested in April, 1931. Testing of this new airplane was so successful that production of the single engine version was terminated. The Ju 52/3m was available with float, ski, or wheel landing gear. One of the first customers for this airplane was Deutsche Luft-Hansa, which had 97 in airline service by 1935. Soon, evaluation of the aircraft's military potential by the clandestine Luftwaffe led to an interim bomber version. The versatility of the Ju 52/3m meant that the airplane was used extensively by the Luftwaffe throughout World War II. When production ended in mid-1944, a total approaching 5,000 airplanes had been built in France and Germany. It is interesting to record that three Ju52/mg4e transport aircraft delivered to the Swiss air force in the late 1930s were not retired from service until 1981, and these airplanes still fly regularly giving joyrides around Europe. The Ju 52/3mg3e was powered by three 725-hp BMW 132A-3 radial piston engines, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 171 mph at 2,955 feet, service ceiling of 19,360 feet, and a range with auxiliary fuel of 808 miles. Airplane armament was two 31-caliber MG 15 machine guns, plus up to 1,102lbs. of bombs. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
