The first of three prototypes of this airplane initially flew on May 12,1936. The new fighter first proved its capabilities during the Polish campaign, and in December, 1939, confirmed its value as a bomber destroyer by shooting down nine out of 22 Vickers Wellingtons on a mission over the Heligoland Bight. However, in 1940, the Bf 110 began to encounter opposition from modern single-engine fighters for the first time and was found unable to match the maneuverability of the Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire. This airplane then found a more suitable role as a night-fighter, where it achieved considerable success. Produced in many variants, about 6,050 Bf 110s had been built when production of the airplane ended in March, 1945. The Bf 110G/R3 used two 1,475-hp Daimler-Benz DB 601B-l inverted V-12 piston engines, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 342 mph at 22,900 feet, service ceiling of 26,245 feet, and a maximum range with drop tanks of 1,305 miles. Airplane armament was two 30-mm MK 108 cannon and two 20-mm MG 151 cannon in nose, and two 31-caliber MG 81 machine guns on trainable mount in rear cockpit. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
