With the prototype first flown on April 17, 1934, this airplane entered what was to become a distinguished service in July, 1936. In 1940 came the supreme triumph of the Swordfish, the memorable attack on the Italian fleet at anchor in Taranto harbor, made after reconnaissance sorties had shown that six battleships, plus attendant cruisers and destroyers, were sheltering there. The attack, made by 21 Swordfish airplanes on the night of November 11, 1940, was launched in two waves, with an hour interval between them. Reconnaissance photos confirmed that the Italian navy had been dealt a shattering blow: three battleships were damaged severely, two of them under water; a cruiser and two destroyers had been hit; and two auxiliary vessels had been sunk. In the short space of one hour the balance of naval power in the Mediterranean had been irrevocably changed. Later, with rockets and mines, these airplanes achieved almost unbelievable success in ASW (antisubmarine warfare) operations, a highlight coming in September, 1944, when Swordfish aboard the escort carrier H.M.S. Vindex, then employed in escorting a convoy to the USSR, sank four U-boats in a single voyage. Production ended in 1944, after Fairey had built 692 airplanes and Blackburn 1,699 airplanes, for a grand total of 2,391 planes. This two/three seat torpedo-bomber-reconnaissance biplane was powered by one 750-hp Bristol Pegasus XXX 9-cylinder radial piston engine, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 138 mph, cruising speed of 120 mph, service ceiling of 10,700 feet, and a maximum range of 1,030 miles. Airplane armament was one forward-firing synchronized 7.7-mm (303-caliber) Vickers machine gun in fuselage and one 7.7-mm (303-caliber) Lewis or Vickers K gun on Fairey High-Speed Mounting in rear cockpit, plus a torpedo of 1,610 lbs., or depth charges, mines, or bombs up to 1,500 lbs., or up to eight rocket projectiles on underwing racks. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
