The Cessna Model 170 and its immediate successors of the same family have the double distinction of being the best-selling series of light planes of all time, and also the most widely produced aircraft series yet developed, with over 60,000 of the 170, 172, 175, and 182 Models (including civil and military derivatives) being built by the end of 1987. The origins of the series of airplanes stretch back to 1948, when Cessna introduced the Model 170. In March, 1956, Cessna announced a new Model 182, which was an addition to the standard fixed-gear family, but powered by a 230-hp Continental O-470-S. This airplane was available in Standard, Skylane, and Skylane II versions, with factory-installed options to enhance customer appeal. Under the designation T-41 Mescalero, the USAF used a basically similar model of the 172 for initial training of its pilots beginning in July of 1964. The more powerful Turbo Skylane RG version used one 235-hp Avco Lycoming O-540-L3C5D flat-six turbocharged piston engine, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 215 mph at 20,000 feet, cruising speed at 20,000 feet of 199 mph, certified ceiling of 20,000 feet, and a range with maximum fuel at 10,000 feet of 1,186 miles.
