The Cessna Citation, announced in 1968, was one of the first of the new generation of turbofan-powered business jets, a response to growing pressure from environmentalists for quieter engines and from operators for better fuel economy. When the Prototype flew for the first time on September 15, 1969, and deliveries began in 1972, this airplane posed a serious commercial threat to aircraft such as the D.H. 125, Falcon 20, Learjets, and Sabreliner which had dominated the market to that time. In 1976, deliveries began of an improved Model 501 Citation I, an airplane with increased wing span and improved engines. When production ceased in June, 1985, there had been 691 Citation I's delivered. The later 550 Citation II was powered by two 2,500-lb. thrust each Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-4 turbofan engines, giving the airplane a cruising speed of 443 mph, certified ceiling of 43,000 feet, and a range with six passengers plus allowances of 1,969 miles.
