Beech Model 17 Staggerwing model airplane

America's "barnstorming" pilots of the early 1920's developed eye-catching razzle-dazzle routines that included aerobatics, wing-walking, trapeze acts, and rope-ladder transfers from one airplane to another. Soon a crowd would gather to enjoy the show, and from them the pilots would "drum up" a few passengers for a short flight around the meadow from which they were operating. Many were concerned only to scrape a living from this new and exciting field of aviation, using talents acquired during World War I; others wanted, more specifically, to make the nation air-minded. Far too many were to die in flying accidents, resulting from indifferent aircraft or poor standards of maintenance, but many survived to begin air-taxi operations. Some, like Walter Beech and Clive Cessna, became involved in the design and manufacture of airplanes that would be suitable for "the man in the street" when the moment came for him to take to the air. Together with Lloyd Stearman, Beech and Cessna formed the Travel Air Manufacturing Company during 1924, and six years later this was acquired by the Curtiss-Wright Corporation. Walter Beech then decided to plough his own furrow and, together with his wife Olive, established the Beech Aircraft Corporation during 1932. Walter Beech died in 1950, but his wife went on to run the company; together they made it the success story that it is today. A key to that success was the Beech Model 17, but the high performance of the initial Model 17R, of which only two airplanes were built, meant that it was very much an experienced pilot's airplane, and unsuitable for the far wider market that was sought. First flown during November 1932, an exciting event witnessed by the company's staff of eight employees, the Model 17R was able to demonstrate a remarkable speed range of 60-200 mph. The excellent performance of the "Staggerwing" as the airplane became popularly known, meant that the company's efforts were concentrated upon making it easier to handle. Wider market acceptance came with the Model B17L, first flown in February, 1934, with more docile handling characteristics, while retaining a speed range of 45-175 mph. The Model 17 was now the marketable commodity that was eventually to establish Beech as a major aircraft manufacturer. From that time a wide variety of Staggerwings were built for both civil and military use, being steadily improved, and incorporating over the years a number of different engines. The Model G17S used one 450-hp Pratt & Whitney R-985-AN-4 Wasp Junior radial piston engine, giving this airplane a maximum speed of 212 mph, economic cruising speed of 185 mph at 9,500 feet, and maximum range at economic cruising speed of about 1,000 miles.
