A Pan American specification for a long-range transatlantic flying-boat, issued on August 15, 1931, called for an aircraft able to carry a crew of four and at least 12 passengers over a range of 2,500 miles at a cruising speed of 145 mph. On November 30, 1932, the airline signed contracts, with Martin for its M-130 design and with Sikorsky for the Sikorsky S-42. The S-42 had a conventional flying-boat hull, with four 700-hp Pratt & Whitney Hornet S5D1G engines installed in the leading edge of the parasol wing. The first was delivered to Pan American's Dinner Key base in August, 1934 and its first scheduled service, from Miami to Rio de Janeiro, took place on August 16th. During 1935, S-42s pioneered the route across the Pacific from the West Coast to Manila in the Philippines, and in 1937 an S-42 surveyed a South Pacific route to New Zealand. Ten aircraft were built. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
