A decision to evaluate the single-engined Ju-52 as a three-engined transport airplane led to the seventh airframe on the production line being converted as the prototype Junkers Ju-52/3m, powered by three 550-hp Pratt & Whitney Hornet engines. When tested in April, 1931, the performance of this three-engined airplane was so markedly improved by comparison with that of the single-engined Ju-52, that production of the single-engine version was terminated. The first customer was Lloyd Aero Boliviano, which received seven airplanes. This unusual corrugated-finish plane was available with float, ski, or wheel landing gear. By the end of 1935, 97 of the airplanes were in airline use, including 51 with Luft-Hansa. Evaluation of the Ju-52/3m's military potential by the clandestine Luftwaffe led to an interim bomber version of the airplane. The versatility of this aircraft meant that the type was used extensively by the Luftwaffe throughout the World War II. When production ended in mid-1944, a total approaching 5,000 airplanes had been built in France and Germany. Post-World War II, the French built more than 400 for Air France and air force, and Spain built 170 for the Spanish air force under the designation CASA 352. It is interesting to record that three Ju-52mg4e transport aircraft delivered to the Swiss air force in the late-1930s were not retired from service until 1981, and these airplanes still fly regularly giving joyrides around Europe. The Ju-52/3mg3e was powered by three 725-hp BMW 132A-3 radial piston engines, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 171 mph at 2,955 feet, service ceiling of 19,360 feet, and a range with auxiliary fuel of 808 miles. Airplane armament was two 7.92-mm MG 15 machine guns, plus up to 1,102 lbs. of bombs. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
