Initially produced in a helicopter competition for a US Army contract, Bell lost the competition to a Hughes model. But if the Army had some doubts about the capabilities of the Bell HO-4 submission, the company did not, and after losing the competition it built a new prototype of the helicopter which it designated as the Model 206A JetRanger. This helicopter flew for the first time on January 10,1966, and on October 20, 1966, received FAA certification. The Army soon became somewhat disenchanted with Hughes when the cost per helicopter began to climb rather steeply, and the production rate to fall off. As a result, the Army's LOH (Light Observation Helicopter) competition was reopened in 1967 and, on March 8, 1968, Bell's Model 206A was announced as the winner. With exceptional capability and reliability, the JetRanger has been built in large numbers since 1966. The 206B JetRanger III is powered by one 420-shp Allison 250-C20B turboshaft, flat-rated to 317 shp., giving the helicopter a maximum cruising speed of 134 mph at 5,000 feet, service ceiling of 13,5000 feet, and a range with maximum fuel and payload at 5,000 feet of 378 miles. All helicopter models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
