The revolutionary feature of this new helicopter was its powerplant, consisting of two turboshaft engines mounted side-by-side and driving, via a combining gearbox, a single output shaft. Besides more power there was another very considerable advantage of the twin turbines, in the event of a failure of one of the two turbines, sensing torquemeters in the combining gearbox signal the remaining turbine to develop power for emergency or continuous operation. UH-1N deliveries for the US Navy and Marine Corps began in 1971. The enhanced safety of the helicopter offered by the Twin-Pac powerplant has resulted in many sales to operators who provide support to offshore gas/oil prospecting and production companies, as well as to air taxi organizations. The UH-1N is powered by one Pratt & Whitney Aircraft of Canada PT6T-3 Turbo Twin-Pac coupled turboshaft, flat rated to 1,290 shp for takeoff and to 1,130 shp for continuous operation. The UH-1N has a maximum cruising speed of 143 mph at sea level, service ceiling of 14,200 feet, and a range with standard fuel at sea level with no reserves of 261 miles. All helicopter models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
