The interest expressed by airlines in an airplane with a capacity between those of its Model 767-300 and the 747-400 led Boeing at the end of 1986 to start the work of defining such an airplane, which was seen as a rival to the Airbus A330 and A340 as well as another American type, the McDonnell Douglas MD-11. The project definition phase led to the launch of the Model 777 on October 29, 1990. The Boeing 777 is a turbofan powered long-haul airplane in which a major contribution comes from the Japanese aircraft industry, of which three companies have a risk-sharing partnership. New aluminum alloys and weight-saving composite materials are employed in many components of the airplane. The Model 777-200 is powered by two 74,000-lb. thrust Pratt & Whitney PW4074 turbofans, giving the airplane a maximum cruising speed of Mach 0.87 and cruising Mach 0.83, service ceiling of 43,100 feet, and a range of 4,840 miles with 363 passengers in two classes.
