B29

U.S. Army Air Corps - Boeing Model 345 / B-29A Superfortress model airplane

Boeing, because of the company's foresight, was much further along the design road in 1940 than its competition of this aircraft, and being able to convince the USAAC that it would have production airplanes available within two or three years, Boeing had received orders for more than 1,500 airplanes before the first prototype was even flown, on September 21, 1942. The first service test airplane was first flown on June 26, 1943, and deliveries of the aircraft began almost immediately. While itself one of the most innovative airplanes in aviation history, the B-29 also played a part in supersonic research, used as a launch platform for dropping rocket-powered research airplanes. The production total of nearly 4,000 B-29s of all versions must be regarded as very large, having regard to their size and cost, and it is not surprising that B-29s saw a wide variety of employment following World War II, operating under several designations. A number of B-29s were used operationally during the Korean War. The B-29 was powered by four 2,200-hp Wright R-3350-23-23A/41 Cyclone 18 turbocharged radial piston engines, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 358 mph at 25,000 feet, cruising speed of 230 mph, service ceiling of 31,850 feet, and a range of 3,250 miles. Airplane armament was two 50-caliber machine guns in each of four remotely-controlled power-operated turrets, and three 50-caliber guns or two 50-caliber guns and one 20-mm cannon in the tail turret. As we all know, the B29 holds the dubious honor of being the only airplane to ever drop an atomic bomb during a time of war. The first B29 to drop the A-bomb was the Enola Gay (model #AM211-DR above), named after the mother of its pilot, Colonel Tibbets.

All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
