The last of Grumman's piston-engined carrier-based fighters, the prototype of this airplane was first flown on August 21, 1944. It was not only smaller than the superb Hellcat, but was also some 20 per cent lighter, resulting in a rate of climb about 30 per cent greater than that of its predecessor. Grumman had more than achieved the specification requirements of the airplane, but also crowned this by starting delivery of production aircraft in February 1945, only six months after the first flight of the prototype. When production of the airplane ended in May , 1949, Grumman had built 1,266 Bearcats. The F8F-1B was powered by one 2,100-hp Pratt & Whitney R-2800-34W Double Wasp 18-cylinder engine, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 421 mph at 19,700 feet, cruising speed of 163 mph, initial climb rate of 4,570 feet per minute, service ceiling of 38,700 feet, and a range of 1,105 miles. Airplane armament was four 20-mm cannon, plus underwing hardpoints for two 1,.000 lb., bombs, or four 5-in. rocket projectiles, or two 150 gal. drop tanks. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
