The prototype of the C-123 first flew on October 14, 1949. A cantilever high-wing monoplane of all-metal construction, the C-123 had a large-capacity fuselage upswept at the rear and incorporating a loading door in the undersurface that could be lowered to serve as a ramp. Other features of the configuration were a conventional but tall tail unit, retractable tricycle landing gear, and power provided by two Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp radial engines. As an alternative to cargo, the main cabin could accommodate 60 fully-equipped troops, or 50 stretcher patients plus six sitting patients and six medical attendants. The C-123J was a redesignation of 10 C-123Bs for operation under Arctic conditions following installation of Fairchild J44 auxiliary turbojets in wingtip pods. The C-123 Provider was also one of the airplanes used by the CIA's "Air America" in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War.
