On September 13, 1931, flying a Supermarine S.6B, Flight Lieutenant George Stainforth raised the world absolute speed record to 379 mph on the same day that another S.6B captured the Schneider trophy outright for Britain. These planes used a 2,350-hp version of the Rolls-Royce "R" engine. The S.6B later raised the speed record to 407 mph.
