With the amazing Macchi M. C. 72, Mario Castoldi reached the pinnacle of his design career. This plane used one 2,850 hp Fiat A. S. 6 24-cylinder double V-12 piston engine (essentially two V-12 engines in tandem joined by a single crankshaft, each driving one of the two contra rotating propellers via a co-axial shaft, counter rotating propellers eliminating the on-water torque problems which had plagued high-powered seaplanes. On October 23, 1934, an M. C. 72 (preserved at the Aeronautica Militaire Italiana museum at Vigna di Valle, near Rome) set an absolute world speed record of 440.683 mph, to this day still the world speed record for a piston engined float plane. Interestingly, due to enormous cooling requirements, the long twin metal floats were carried on four broad-chord struts which were covered with coolant radiators, the wing was covered with flat-tube surface radiators, there were additional radiators on the upper surface of the floats, and an oil cooler was fitted around the side and undersurface of the rear fuselage, aft of the pilot's open (talk about wind in your hair experience!) cockpit. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand. Dimensions: Wingspan, 18 1/2" -Length, 16 1/4" -Scale, 1/20 Macchi Castoli M.
