Then the largest airplane in the world, the Dornier Do X made its first flight from the Bodensee on July 12, 1929. The aircraft was intended to carry up to 100 passengers (although it once carried 170, including 10 stowaways) across the Atlantic in comfort comparable with that of ocean liners. It had individual sleeping cabins, lounge, smoking room, bathroom, kitchen, and dining room arranged on three decks in the 131 ft. hull. The initial Siemens Jupiter engines developed insufficient power and were replaced by 12 Curtiss Conquerors, but cooling problems continued to reduce the output of the rear engines. The Dornier Do X was among those destroyed when the Berlin Museum was severely damaged by bombs during World War II. Two further examples were built, with Fiat engines, and were used experimentally be the Italian air force , but were, unfortunately, eventually scrapped. This transoceanic flying boat used twelve 640-hp Curtiss Conqueror V-12 piston engines, giving the plane a maximum speed of 130 mph, cruising speed of 109 mph, service ceiling of 4,100 ft, and a range of 1,367 miles. The plane had an empty equipped weight of 72,036 lb and a maximum take-off weight of 123,459 lb. It had a span of 157 ft 5 3/4 in, length of 131 ft 4 in, height of 33 ft 1 1/2 in, and wing area of 4,843.92 sq ft. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
