The holder of numerous world records, this airplane came from humble beginnings. First becoming keenly interested in aviation during 1910, the brothers Allan and Malcolm Loughead (pronounced Lockheed) founded, in early 1916, the first company to bear their name, Loughead Aircraft Manufacturing Company at Santa Barbara, California. This organization ran into financial difficulties and was closed in 1920 or 1921, and it was not until late 1926 or early 1927 that there was formed a new company, the Lockheed Aircraft Company. This company title lasted for less than three years, but in that time a remarkable airplane was developed and put into production, the Lockheed Vega, which was designed by John K. "Jack" Northrop with assistance from Gerard F. "Gerry" Vultee, both later to found significant American aircraft companies. The initial Vega flew for the first time on July 4, 1927, and within the short space of six years the capability of this airplane was world renowned. A host of achievements brought this fame: among them, this airplane performed the first trans-Arctic flight and the first exploratory flight over Antarctica flown by Wilkins and Eielson; the first solo transatlantic flight by a woman from Newfoundland to Ireland by Amelia Earhart in the Vega "Little Red Bus"; and the first solo round-the-world flight by Wiley Post in the Vega "The Winnie Mae". When production ended, a total of 128 Vega airplanes had been built: 115 by Lockheed, nine by Detroit Aircraft Corporation (of which Lockheed was a division from 1929-1931), and four by others. The Vega 5C was powered by one 450-hp Pratt & Whitney Wasp SC-1 radial piston engine, giving the airplane a maximum speed of 185 mph, service ceiling of 18,000 feet, and a standard range of 550 miles. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
