In early 1920, Curtiss became involved in the design and construction of racing aircraft, with much success. Cooperation between the US Army and the US Navy (which had been fiercely competitive up to that point) resulted in an order for three new racers (this being the last for Curtiss racers), all three being examples of the Model 42, designated R3C-1. Two were entered in the 1925 Pulitzer race, with the Army gaining first place and the Navy second. All three were then given float landing gear for the 1925 Schneider Contest, being redesignated R3C-2 (Model 42A). The Navy then withdrew, and the race was won by US Army Lieutenant James H. Doolitte. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
