Sparrowhawks were used in the 1930s to be carried aboard Navy rigid airships (blimps). They were first used with the USS Akron, but there were none aboard when she went down at sea in 1933. They then went on to fly with her sister ship the USS Macon, but when the Macon too was lost in 1935, four Sparrowhawks when down with her. During their relatively brief career the racy Sparrowhawks, with their colorful paint schemes and lighthearted unit insignia caught the imagination of the American people. They gained publicity (probably out of proportion to their small numbers) as a result of the unique and dramatic scenario of single-seat fighters operating from their huge lighter-than-air mother ship. One Sparrowhawk has been preserved and is the property of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D. C. All airplane models are Hand Carved, Hand Painted Mahogany and come fully assembled with removable desk stand.
