Hughes H-4 / HK-1 "Spruce Goose" model airplane Designed under the direction of Howard Hughes, this 180-ton aircraft, popularly nicknamed the "Spruce Goose" (being built of plywood), was the largest flying boat ever built, and was, at the time, the largest airplane ever built. Its intended role was to ferry vast amounts of troops and cargo across the Pacific. Piloted by the eccentric millionaire, with D. Grant as co-pilot, the Hercules made only one flight. This was in a straight line measuring about one mile over Los Angeles Harbor on November 2, 1947. The Hercules was powered by eight 3,000 hp Pratt & Whitney R4360-4A piston engines. It was designed to have a maximum speed at sea level of 235 mph, cruising speed of 140 mph, service ceiling of 21,000 ft, and a range of 1,575 miles. It had a wingspan of 319 ft. 11 in., length of 218 ft. 8 in., height of 79 ft. 4 in., and a wing area of 11,430 sq. ft.
