Intended for long-range transoceanic services, the Martin Model 130 China Clipper was a large four-engined monoplane flying-boat. Three were built for Pan American Airways during 1935, each accommodating a crew of four and a maximum of 48 passengers for daytime operations; optionally, the cabin could be equipped to cater for 18 passengers with sleeping bunks for night operations. These planes entered service on October 21, 1936, and were used on Pan Am's routes from San Francisco to Manila in the Philippine Islands. Two were impressed by the U. S. Navy in 1942, and used for general transport duties without redesignation.
